Emilio Hernandez, 55, of Bay Shore, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars after a jury convicted him of robbing a Bay Shore laundromat while disguised and armed with a starter pistol, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced Friday, March 14.

The masked ex-con stormed the laundromat on April 11, 2023, wielding the weapon and demanding cash. He fled in a black Honda, but a quick-thinking witness filmed his getaway. Suffolk County Police tracked him down within minutes, recovering the stolen money, disguise, and rubber gloves used in the heist.

Hernandez's criminal record reads like a rap sheet straight out of a crime thriller:

  • 2011: Robbery – 8 years in prison
  • 1995: Attempted Robbery – 4-8 years in prison
  • 1994: Robbery – 30 months to 5 years in prison
  • 1989: Attempted Robbery – 18 to 54 months in prison

“This defendant had a history of violent felony convictions for prior robberies. The jury properly convicted him, and the judge rightfully gave him the maximum sentence under the law,” Tierney said.

Hernandez was convicted on Feb. 5, 2025, of:

  • Felony robbery in the second degree
  • Misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle

His case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys James J. O’Rourke IV and Alexander D. Sylvan, with assistance from ADA Pilar O’Rourke. He was represented by Michael Blakey, Esq.
